We include Mouth Cancer screening as an essential part of your routine check-up appointment.
Regular visits to the dentist give the chance for early detection. Our dentists know what to look for and know what actions to be taken.
What is Mouth Cancer?
Mouth cancer, or oral cancer, is the process of abnormal cell division anywhere within the oral cavity (mouth).
What is a mouth cancer screening?
Mouth cancer screening is a detection procedure whereby your dentist will check all of the soft tissues in your mouth for any signs of abnormality. They will check your lymph nodes, lips, cheeks, tongue, gums, hard and soft palate and the lining of your mouth to detect signs of any abnormal lesions.
What Causes Mouth Cancer?
Most occurrences of oral cancer can be attributed to lifestyle choices that increase your chance of developing abnormal cells.
Using tobacco substances is linked to approximately 75% of cases, as well as drinking alcohol to excess. A combination of both can increase this risk, making it up to 30 times more likely to develop oral cancer.
As part of your routine examination, we will ask you a series of questions about your lifestyle as part of this risk assessment and will offer practical advice where necessary.
Other causes can include:
- Being overweight.
- An unhealthy diet.
- Chewing betel nuts.
- Exposure to sunlight and a deficient immune system.
What are the signs of Mouth Cancer?
This type of cancer can occur in several places, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, and gums. Early signs may include ulcers or sores that don’t heal within three weeks, irregular lumps, as well as red or white patches within the mouth.
It is recommended that you check your mouth regularly for early detection and visit your dentist with anything that seems out of the norm. Our team of dental health professionals will be more than happy to either refer you for further tests if needed and put your mind at rest.
