Our crowns are made using our digital scanner at New River Dental.
We send ours to some of the top laboratories in the UK with the click of a button to be manufactured by a milling machine or hand by a skilled dental technician for optimal customisation and fit.
What is a crown?
A crown is a restorative dental treatment used as a covering or to “cap” and protects a weakened tooth. Usually used to treat cracked, root canal treated, or heavily broken-down teeth, crowns can also be used as part of a bespoke cosmetic treatment plan to improve aesthetic appearance.
What are crowns made of?
Dental crowns are made of a comprehensive range of materials to suit your individual needs. Crowns can be made for both functional and cosmetic reasons. Depending on the tooth and clinical needs, the crowns can be constructed from a metal alloy, glass ceramic or porcelain or a combination thereof.
The most natural-looking crowns are made from porcelain.
How is a crown fitted?
Before your crown is made, your dentist will prepare your natural tooth. Preparation involves skillfully shaping the tooth to make room for a crown to fit comfortably. You will be given a local anaesthetic to prevent any sensitivity.
Once the tooth has been prepared, moulds or 3D digital scans will be taken and sent to our dental laboratory to make your customised crown. You will have a temporary crown during this time to protect the tooth, maintain the space, size, and ensure comfort.
During your fitting appointment, we will trial the crown and ensure that you are happy with the appearance and fit. We will then cement the crown in place.
How long will my crown last?
It is rare for crowns to deteriorate due to the materials they are made from. With a good oral hygiene routine and regular dental examinations, you should expect your crown to last more than ten years. Your dentist will discuss all treatment options and likely longevity at your initial consultation.
